It is a small turquoise lake at 2,500 metres, fed by glacier melt from the Karakoram, with a wooden footbridge across the inlet and a tiny jetty where you can hire a paddle boat. Getting to Upper Kachura from Skardu
Upper Kachura is 32km north-east of Skardu, roughly a one-hour drive on a sealed road past Shangrila. The trailhead car park is a 200-metre walk from the lake itself, on a flat path through pine forest — accessible for elderly travellers and small kids.

What you do at Upper Kachura
The lake itself is the main event. Walk the rim (about 30 minutes, easy gradient), hire a wooden paddle boat from the jetty (PKR 1,500 for 30 minutes), or just sit on the bridge and watch the trout in the inlet. The water is meltwater-clear.
There is a small dhaba on the access path serving tea, eggs and Balti dumplings. For a longer stop, the Shangrila Resort is fifteen minutes away by jeep and has a full restaurant overlooking the heart-shaped lake.
When to visit Upper Kachura
Year-round. The lake does not freeze fully even in deep winter, and the surrounding pine forest looks dramatic in snow. Peak visiting is May to October, with July-August being warmest (daytime highs of 25-30°C, swimmable for the brave).
Best for photography: early morning (the lake is mirror-still before 9am) and late afternoon (golden light on the western shore). Avoid weekend lunchtimes in high season if you want it to yourself.
