Overview

K2 Base Camp Trek

The K2 Base Camp trek is the great trek of the Karakoram. Sixteen days from Skardu, on foot, across one of the longest non-polar glaciers on earth (the Baltoro), to a place called Concordia where four of the world's five highest peaks rise in a single panorama — K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I and Gasherbrum II. From Concordia, a long day-hike takes you to the foot of K2 itself, the second-highest mountain on the planet and the only 8,000-metre peak that has never been climbed in winter without controversy.

We have been running the K2 base camp trek as a small, locally-led operation since 2014. Every expedition is led by a certified Balti high-altitude guide with a minimum of five seasons on the Baltoro, supported by a full porter crew, a dedicated cook and a medic. Group sizes are capped at 12 because that is what we can safely look after. Below is the full expedition — what it costs, what you need, when to go, and what makes the difference between a good K2 trek and a great one.

01

The 16-day expedition, route by route

Days 1-3: Skardu and the jeep transfer to Askole. Two nights in Skardu for arrival and final gear check, then a brutal 8-10 hour 4×4 ride to Askole (3,050m) — the last village before the Baltoro Glacier. Day 3 is rest and acclimatisation at Askole with a short walk up to Korophan.

Days 4-9: Askole to Concordia. Trek stages of 4-8 hours per day through Jhola, Paiyu (waterfall and forest), Khoburtse, Urdukas (the view of the Trango Towers and Cathedral group is unforgettable), Goro II on the glacier, and Concordia at 4,600m. Day 9 is a rest day at Concordia — you have earned it.

Day 10: K2 Base Camp day. A 12-hour return hike from Concordia to the foot of K2 at 5,150m — the highest point of the trek. Days 11-15: return via the Baltoro or, for stronger groups, over the Gondogoro La pass (5,585m) to Hushe — a more dramatic but technically harder return that requires fixed-rope crossings. Day 16: drive Skardu and rest day before departure.

  • Certified Balti high-altitude guide (5+ Baltoro seasons)
  • Full porter crew, cook and assistant cook
  • Group medic with altitude medicine and oxygen
  • All meals on trek — three hot meals daily
  • Sleeping tent (twin share), mess tent, toilet tent
  • All park fees, NOC, porter insurance

What it costs and what is included

The K2 Base Camp expedition is priced from USD 2,400 per person on a shared-group basis (typically 6-12 trekkers). The price includes everything from arrival in Skardu through return to Skardu — accommodation in Skardu either side, jeep transfer to and from Askole, full porter and cook crew on trek, all meals on trek, all camping equipment except your sleeping bag, all permits, park fees and porter insurance.

Not included: international flights, Pakistan visa, travel insurance (mandatory and must cover high-altitude evacuation), your sleeping bag, personal trekking gear, and the optional Gondogoro La supplement (USD 350 per person for the rope crew and ice equipment).

Best time, fitness and altitude

The K2 base camp trek window is late June to mid-September. Earlier, the Baltoro is buried in snow and river crossings are dangerous. Later, weather closes the higher passes and porter crews go home. Our most popular departures are mid-July and mid-August — long days, stable weather, the best chance of a clear K2 viewing day from Concordia.

Fitness: you need to be able to comfortably walk 6-8 hours per day for two weeks, carrying a light day pack (10-12kg, the rest is on porters), with sustained ascent and altitude gain. Previous trekking experience is strongly recommended; previous high-altitude experience (Everest base camp, Annapurna circuit, Mount Toubkal) is ideal.

Altitude tops out at 5,150m on the K2 base camp day and 5,585m if you cross Gondogoro La. We build in two scheduled rest days for acclimatisation and run a careful daily medical check from Urdukas onwards. Diamox is recommended; oxygen is carried by the medic.

What sets a great K2 trek apart

Three things, in our experience. The guide-to-trekker ratio (we cap at 1:6 senior staff). The porter system — we pay our porters above market rate and provide proper insurance, because a happy porter team makes a happy trek. And the rest days — too many operators skip the Concordia rest day to save a day; we never do, because that rest is what makes the K2 base camp day-hike actually enjoyable.

We have run more than fifty K2 base camp expeditions since 2014 with a 100 percent porter-safety record and a 96 percent successful summit-of-trek rate (everyone reaches Concordia; about one in twenty trekkers chooses not to do the K2 base camp day for personal reasons).
